SFMOMA Field Trip

Last month’s field trip to the newly renovated Museum of Modern Art was a great success! Our students were able to view the current exhibitions while completing a scavenger hunt activity. They considered Artist’s such as Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, Chuck Close (pictured above), Joan Mitchell, Richard Serra, and many others. The students had the opportunity to discover art that they enjoyed, or perhaps did not agree with, while viewing paintings and sculptures dealing with themes of cubism, minimalism, abstract expressionism, and contemporary art.

PSAT Test

On October 19, the WIS students grades 9-11, participated in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or the PSAT. The students diligently tested for about 3 hours, challenging their knowledge in Reading, Writing, and Math.  Test scores, cross-test scores, and sub scores will be available the week of Dec 5, 2016.

About the PSAT
When you think about the PSAT you probably think of it as a pre-SAT. While the PSAT is a great primer for the SAT (and even the ACT), it is way more than just a trial run for the real thing. More than 3.4 million high school students (mostly juniors and sophomores, plus freshmen this year) take this nationwide, multiple-choice test every year.

PSAT Quick Facts

Frequency 1 time/year
Duration 2 hours, 45 minutes (10th/11th)  2 hours, 25 minutes (9th)
Sections Math, Evidence-Based Reading & Writing
Max. Score 1520 (10th/11th)  1440 (9th)

What is the PSAT and why is it important?
The PSAT won’t count towards college admissions applications, but it is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. This means that some of the highest scoring students may win scholarship money, so while the student shouldn’t stress out about the PSAT, the student certainly shouldn’t ignore it either. Instead, the PSAT should be used as practice for the SAT and ACT and one of the starting points on the college admissions journey.

What does the PSAT test?
The PSAT 10/11 has two sections: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. The student will encounter passage-based questions—sometimes accompanied by tables, graphs, and charts—and math problems drawing upon algebra, geometry, and a little trig.
The PSAT 8/9 also has two sections Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. The student will encounter passage-based questions—sometimes accompanied by tables, graphs, and charts—and math problems drawing upon algebra (linear equations and systems), problem solving, and data analysis.
