Award Winners!
Three of our students collaborated on a poster which was entered in a Human Trafficking Awareness poster contest, and they won 1st place! On Friday, January 10th, Mary Claire Amable, Lauren Hernandez and Tin Dinh were presented with an award at City Hall at an event kicking off Human Trafficking Awareness month. The poster project, using the theme “No One Owns Me,†was organized by art teacher Angie Crabtree. Lauren gave a speech explaining the work, and they were all interviewed by Channel 7 news, and a local radio station. Their winning poster, which was hand drawn and silkscreened, will be distributed to every school in San Francisco, and hung around the city. We are very proud of them. Congratulations!!
Community Service Field Trip

On Thursday, December 5th, Woodside participated in the Chinese Newcomers Service Center’s annual community food drive. All students and teachers helped pack bags of food and distributed them to those in need in Chinatown. Students earned 8 hours of community service for participating in this event, while also having fun! We will be doing this annually, and are very excited to have the opportunity to contribute to our local community again next year!
Inner Sunset SundayOn Sunday, December 8th, WIS participated in the Inner Sunset Sunday at 9th and Irving. In addition to face painting, they exhibited a student artwork display from core classes and Woodshop, and the drama club and band gave performances. We are very proud of them, and excited to have contributed to a local community event! Thank you for coming out to support our amazing students and team!
Winter Games Day

On Friday, December 13th, Woodside had its annual Winter Games Day. Classes were cancelled while students participated in some friendly competition in board games, pool, ping pong, jump roping, and more! Congratulations to all of the winners!

Classes

Statue of Liberty Mural
During the first day of Winter Break, art teacher Angie Crabtree completed the Statue of Liberty mural in the ELM room. Watch the time-lapse below to see how it was done!Next mural in line is the astronomy mural in the Math room. Stay tuned!
WIS Drama Club
On December 13th, Woodside Drama club presented “Nell’s Christmas Carol.” The production, written by Drama teacher Marcus Perry, was a modern take on the Charles Dickens holiday classic “A Christmas Carol.” The show’s main character Nell learned a valuable lesson about family, love and of course…fun! The performance was fantastic!
Science
In Physics class, to kick off our new semester, we had a laboratory exploration called the “slow race”.  Using pegboards, pegs and rubber bands, we composed tracks for ping pong balls to roll.  We used our knowledge of forces and different forms of energy to slow the progress of the ball as it went down the various tracks. Some tricks employed were twisting the rubber bands to add friction, switching between potential and kinetic energy (also known as bouncing), and limiting the slope of the path. In the end, different trials were timed with stopwatches – some as long as 22 seconds! That’s a long time for a ball to fall about half a meter. More importantly, the students got a chance to discuss physics together and see how their plans worked out in a friendly competition.  A good “time” was had by all.
Portrait Drawings
The last completed project in Angie Crabtree’s art classes were celebrity portraits completed in graphite and white pastel on grey paper. The assignment was a play on Andy Warhol’s pop art portraits. For their semester final, they turned this in along with a written statement about how they created their drawing, and why they admire the celebrity they chose. The above drawing was completed of Bruce Lee by Andy Liu. He did an incredible job! Great work Andy!

In the News

Our student, Emily Andrade, attends a special kind of after-school club that convenes in a classroom at City College’s Mission Campus. Their conversations center around things like savings accounts, pay-day lenders, and figuring out what exactly a FAFSA is.

She was mentioned in an article about the club in Mission Local News. Click here to read the full article!

Supporting Non-kill Dog SheltersOne of our students, Nataly Sapozhnikov, volunteers at Northern California Family Dog Rescue located in the Mission District of San Francisco, and plans to enter veterinary school after receiving her Bachelor’s degree. Below is the message from a flyer that she hung at school.

Northern California Family Dog Rescue is an urban dog shelter in San Francisco whose dogs need your help!
They rely heavily on a network of foster homes. I (Nataly) am currently working as a volunteer, and we always need more! The opportunities are endless.  We can accommodate almost any schedule or skill level and need everything from dog walkers and socializers to occasional drivers, helpers at our weekend events, and both long and short term foster families.
If you are interested in volunteering, or know anyone who is interested in adopting or fostering a dog, please come talk to me!
I can also be reached by email at puzirek1997@gmail.com.
Thank you for your support!!

SAT/ACT Diagnostic Test–Saturday, February 1, 9:00-12:00 Noon
All interested Juniors are invited to take an SAT/ACT Diagnostic test at 9:00 on Saturday, February 1 here at school (in the art room).  This test can spare you the time and money of taking both tests to figure out which you would do better on.  Testing will last about 3 hours and the cost is $30.  We will get the results (a 9-page report analyzing the results) in time to register for the March 8 SAT should you wish to take it.  See Debbie immediately if you wish to sign up.

Junior College Counseling Night–Thursday, February 13, 2013, 6:30-8:00 PM
This is the one evening event for both Junior students and parents/guardians to not miss.  We will go over the nuts and bolts of the college application process and the college counseling program at Woodside.  We will also go over the calendar and what you should be doing and when you should be doing it.  Please send your RSVP (both yes and no) to me (ddavidson@wissf.org) so that I know how many people to expect.

Senior Reminders
Although (most) applications are now behind you (Congratulations!!) and we are entering a relatively quiet period, there are still things you need to do:

*Be sure you have set up individual accounts at the schools where you have applied IF the school has asked you to do so.

*Be sure to check ALL those accounts regularly (I recommend every other day) to see if the schools have sent you any messages.  They might be missing items from you or they might request some additional documentation.  Stay on top of this.

*Be sure that you have requested your test scores to be sent to schools.

*If you are applying for financial assistance, get your FAFSA (and CSS Profile if required) submitted ASAP!!  Your parents’ 2013 tax returns need to be completed ASAP as well.

*Take the time to revisit the various school websites and materials to look more closely at the schools and programs.  If you have a chance, go visit or revisit the school.  During this lull you can research the schools more closely to determine your feelings about being a student there.  It’s not uncommon for schools to move around on your list of favorites during this quiet post-application period.

**Update your Naviance account so that your “Colleges I’m Applying To” list is correct.  Add any last-minute additions and remove those schools that you decided to not apply to.

*MOST IMPORTANTLY!!  Keep up the hard work with school!  This is not the time for senior-itis to set in.  Schools will ultimately want to see your final semester grades and if they have slipped badly during the spring, it isn’t unheard of for schools to rescind offers of admission.  You can relax in June!
